how romney wants to cut the taxes as romney explained very clearly in the debate the other night, no, i am not cutting taxes on the richest. what i want to do is lower rates overall by 20%. and eliminate loopholes, deductions, exemptions, that sort of thing. which i think all serious people who look at the tax code think needs to be done. it's the richest of all by the way who take the most advantage of tax deductions. that is a fairer way of looking at t maybe if you have a lot of deductions you don't want to get rid of them. but you always feel like with reductions, somebody else is getting a better deal than you are. mitt romney hasn't specified which deductions. i can think of a few we should get rid of like deductions for state and local taxes. why should the rest of the country be supporting the high tax rates of california and new york? but anyway, that's my position, not mitt romney's and he also explained in the debate, this is my general proposal. we'll argue about it. we'll talk about it. i'll take it to the democrats and we'll work it out. but even the tax policy center th

i would say that the opportunity wednesday night is greater for romney than for obama. and it will be interesting to watch obama confront somebody. if romney has the nerve -- after all, he's up against a sitting president. if he has the nerve to say, you know, gasoline prices the highest in history, unemployment the worst period since the great depression, new recession looming because of your policies. he has to get across being able to say your policies, mr. president. >> sean: remember john mccain did not look obama in the eye. i mean, if there's certain characteristics that you want to lay out for somebody heading into a debate, he's got to be presidential. probably can't call him a liar, but could point out broken promises, failed policies. >> "there you go again" works pretty well. >> sean: or some version thereof. i think people would like to see somebody -- i've never seen this president take a verbal punch. >> i also think people want to know that mitt romney can win the argument. i mean, i think part of the reason you see in the campaign in the doldrums a litt

george will writes romney is behind so on wednesday night it might be risky for romney not to take risks. which is a lot of risk in one sentence. do you think romg will go out there? i mean given his behavior thus far? >> historically the defirst debate is the first time a challenger has a chance to stance on stage on a level playing for field for a couple hours with the incumbent president and it's been the challenger's best debate. so just by showing up, you would think that romney's a slight favorite right now. we have seen obama recently in a higher position than he's been in all year, maybe higher than you would expect based on where the economy is. so i do think romney should have a tail wind at the same time the stuff we're mentioning where he also has tried to avoid articulating where his positions are on a lot of issues, a lot that is common sense but if you take positions further away from the center that damages you and he's not done a lot of running to the center at all in this campaign. that's unusual and he'll be proebds for more detail during the debate. >> the american pu
